NY Times Bestseller 50 Years Ago this week

August 21st 1960 saw James Michener's all time classic "Hawaii" atop the NY Times Review of Books Best Selling Hardcover Fiction list. It would spend the majority of 1960 trading the top spot with Allen Drury's monster smash "Advise and Consent".
During 1959 and 1960 these 2 books amassed 78 weeks at #1.
"Hawaii" would be James Michener's most successful novel of his long and storied career spending 48 total weeks at #1.
2 film adaptations of "Hawaii" were made, the first in 1966 which took its main story from the 3rd chapter of the book which covered the settlement of American missionaries on the islands.
In a 1970 sequel "The Hawaiians" with Charlton Heston covered the latter part of the novel.

Bestselling Novel of 1970

The bestselling novel of 1970 according to Publishers Weekly and the New York Times Book Review was "Love Story" by Erich Segal.
Originally written as a screenplay by Mr. Segal, but when he was able to get it produced he turned it into a novel.
Informally nominated for the National Book Award, it caused a sensation as the 5 judge panel threatened to resign if it was officially nominated. It was withdrawn from consideration but still managed to stay atop the NY Times Best Selling Fiction list for 41 weeks.
It was the last novel to have more than 40 weeks at the top before "The Da Vinci Code" logged 65 non consecutive weeks at the top between April 2003 and April 2006.
"Love Story" did become a movie and was released in December of 1970, starring Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw.

New #1 on the NYTimes Bestseller List - Fiction for June 25th 2010

Debuting this week in the #1 spot on the New York Times Bestselling Hardcover fiction list is Fox News commentator Glenn Beck. His new novel is The Overton Window.
Previously he had been at the top of the fiction list during Christmas 2008 with The Christmas Sweater.

This is of course a fictional tale of the world dealing with the effects of the Overton Window.

The Overton window, in political theory, describes a "window" in the range of public reactions to ideas in public discourse, in a spectrum of all possible options on a particular issue. It is named after its originator, Joseph P. Overton (4 January 1960 - 30 June 2003), former vice president of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.

New #1 on the NYTimes Bestseller List - NonFiction for June 11th 2010

Moving into the top spot this week after being at #4 last week is "SH** My Dad Says" by Justin Halpern. Originally on twitter with things Justin's father would say about everything, it became an internet sensation.
This book will lead into the new fall television season when "Sh** My Dad Says" debuts on CBS with William Shatner as the "Dad" from the title.

New #1 on the NYTimes Bestseller List - Fiction and Non Fiction

The week ending May 14th 2010 gave us 2 new #1 books atop the NY Times Bestseller List.



New to the Top of the fiction list is Dead in the Family (A Sookie Stackhouse Novel) by Charlaine Harris.
This is almost a year to the day that her last Sookie Stackhouse book Dead and Gone reached the top of the list. If you are not familiar with this character, she is the lead in the True Blood HBO series.
Also new to the top 10 of the bestseller list this is are Innocent by Scott Turow debuting at #3, Blue-Eyed Devil by Robert B Parker debuts at #9 and coming in new at #10 is Tell-All by Chuck Palahnuik.


The new #1 book atop the NY Times Non Fiction list is the new memoir from former first lady Laura Bush, Spoken From the Heart debuts at #1 this week. Its been almost 7 years since a first lady had a #1 bestseller, that was Living History by former first lady Hillary Clinton in 2003.
Also debuting this week on the non fiction list in the top ten are Mom: A Celebration of Mothers from StoryCorps. It comes in at #5 while new at #7 is The Last Stand by Nathaniel Philbrick, subtitled Custer, Sitting Bull and The Battle of Little Big Horn.
Coming into the 8th spot is Sh*t My Dad Says by Justin Halpern and the last of the debut books is My Fair Lazy by Jen Lancaster.

New #1 on the NYTimes Bestseller List - Fiction for May 7th 2010

This week again we see a new novel atop the NY Times Fiction Bestseller list, an old favorite returns, its James Patterson.
He brings the latest installment to the Women's Murder Club series, 9th Judgement. This is the 8th Women's Murder Club novel to hit the top spot with only the seventh installment, 7th Heaven, not going to number one.

New #1 on the NYTimes Bestseller List - Fiction

There is a new #1 Fiction Hardback bestseller for the week ending April 30th 2010. Returning to the Top of the list almost a year to the date from his last #1 book is David Baldacci and "Deliver Us From Evil". His previous #1 was from May 1st 2009, "First Family".
From Publisher Weekly on his new book: Bestseller Baldacci's sequel to The Whole Truth (2008) lacks the creative plotting and masterful handling of suspense that marked his earlier thrillers. Evan Waller, outwardly a respectable Canadian businessman but secretly a human trafficker who sells children into prostitution, has expanded into arranging nuclear weapons deals with Islamic fundamentalists. Shaw, the lead of The Whole Truth, sets out to stop Evan, as does Regina Reggie Campion, a British femme fatale, who works for a clandestine group that tracks down and executes war criminals.
