Gunsmoke on Television
Gunsmoke debuted on CBS television on September 10th 1955 at 10pm on Saturday night. It was not an immediate hit that season but came back the next season to finish tied for 7th place (I've Got a Secret). The next season 1957-58 it was the #1 show in primetime with a 43.1 rating, well ahead of the Danny Thomas Show and leading several other westerns into the top ten prime time show list like #3 Tales of Wells Fargo, #4 Have Gun Will Travel, #6 The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp and at #8 The Restless Gun.
This would be the first of 4 straight seasons that Gunsmoke was the #1 rated show on television. A record that it held until All In the Family had 5 straight seasons at #1 (1971-1976).
What I am going to do to pay tribute to this feat by Gunsmoke I am going to post as many of the episodes from that first season it was #1 in the ratings (1957-58) as I can find. First of all though I would like to show the episode from this week, April 26th of 1957, "Innocent Broad".

The 19th Academy Awards and Jack Benny
Today with the assistance of Buck Benny's world class podcast we have the full radio broadcast of the Academy Awards held on March 13th 1947 with host Jack Benny.
Held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, I believe this was the first year that clips were shown from the films nominated for Best Picture and clips for all the acting categories.
Now dont get your hopes for a laugh fest with Jack as host because he doesnt even get introduced until 1 hr 50 minutes into the show. Now he does a great job and gets in quite a few jokes at his own expense about "The Horn Blows at Midnight" and "To Be or Not To Be", but he isnt the quick, rapid fire joke teller like Bob Hope the year before but he entertains as always.
The winner for 1946 was the classic "The Best Years of Our Lives", taking home 7 Awards out of 8 nominations.

In yesterday's posting of the 6 part series "The Story of Gunsmoke" (courtesy of Buck Benny's Podcast) they had the episode of "Marshall Proudfoot" which aired July 20th 1958 on CBS radio season 6.
The TV version of the episode also called "Marshall Proudfoot", but instead of Chester's father coming to visit it was his uncle but otherwise the script stay pretty close to the radio version. This aired January 10th 1959, season 4.

The Story of Gunsmoke
Thanks to Buck Benny and in celebration of its 60th anniversary, here in 6 parts is a retrospective of Gunsmoke the radio version. This was done in the early 70s and contains interviews with William Conrad (Matt Dillon), Parley Baer (Chester), John Meston and Norman McDonnell (the creators, writers and producers) and Georgia Ellis (Miss Kitty).
This is a great show with a lot of behind the scenes stories and even discusses the beginning of the television version.

Bonanza - Walter and the Outlaws
From Season 5, the season's final episode "Walter and The Outlaws". Aired on NBC May 24th 1964
Bonanza aired on Sunday nights 9-10pm and was the #2 show for the 1963-64 season. It was sandwiched in the ratings by CBS' Wednesday 9-10pm power house combo of the Beverly Hillbillies at #1 and the Dick Van Dyke Show at #3.
In this episode the dog Walter is the same dog from the first episode of the 1964-65 season of the Andy Griffith Show "Barney's Bloodhound". He was named "Blue" in that episode.
This episode is probably the best example of just how fun and funny Bonanza could be and how everyone on the show interacted so good to make it a hilarious episode.

Classic Television - The Andy Griffith Show
One of my very favorite tv shows of all time is The Andy Griffith Show (B&W). I could watch this show everyday and never get old.
Here is a great episode from Season 5. Episode 7 "Man in the Middle". Originally aired on CBS TV November 2nd 1964

Grammy Flashback
With the Grammy Awards coming up on Feb 12 2012 I thought I would do some looks back at past Grammy Award winners.
Tonight we start with the 1961 Grammy Awards and the Album of the Year and New Artist of the Year winner, Bob Newhart.
The Album of the Year was "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart"
This was the debut album for Mr. Newhart and was recorded live at The Tidelands Club in Houston, TX.
He spent 14 non consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard album chart. This was the first comedy record to be named Album of the Year and the only time a comedian has been awarded the Best New Artist Grammy.
Bob Newhart wanted to title the album "The Most Celebrated New Comedian Since Attila" but the Warner Brothers executives didnt care for that and created "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart", but allowed his original title to stay as the subtitle.
here is the entire album for your enjoyment.
